Notice: Ticks at SERF: more info
SERF is available to a range of postgraduate and undergraduate research projects including vegetation and water studies, cadastral and topographical surveys, flora and fauna studies, social impact assessments and built environment projects.
SERF is also open to QUT staff who propose research that is consistent with the facility’s mission of research, education, sustainability and long-term resource protection.
Staff and students should submit the appropriate Property access forms to firstname.lastname@example.org.
All permit forms for research and educational projects at the SERF must be accompanied by faculty-approved Risk Assessment proforma(s) (e.g. Science and Engineering Faculty's Risk Management Form and Fieldwork & Work Off-Campus Form).
The SERF Research Committee will review all applications and research proposals to ensure that proposed projects will neither conflict with ongoing work nor compromise the integrity of the facility or the health of its environment. Keys to SERF will be provided once approval is given.
It would be appreciated that any data relating to SERF that is collected by researchers be uploaded onto the research database and made available to interested parties. Copyright of the data will remain with the author.
The careful management of SERF’s ecosystems in a state as close to natural as possible allows researchers to quantify changes observed in similar ecosystems affected by a range of human impacts, as such all transport to the property is to be kept to a minimum.
It is a requirement that there be no fewer than two persons in a car travelling to SERF. This is to minimise the ecological impact on the land and its surrounding infrastructure. Parking facilities are limited; it is not advised to park your car on the side of the road as this is dangerous due to the limited visibility of the road users. We advise that you park inside the gates (at the Barracks or in the open field).
Facility regulations must be followed at all times and students must be accompanied by a SERF permit holder at all times. As this is a semi-rural property, there are several conditions to adhere to while you are on the property.
There is now a new SERF WHS Online Induction that all QUT staff and students must complete before visiting the property, even if they have been there in the past. This induction is manditory and only needs to be undertaken once per year. The induction can be found on the QUT blackboard website under SEF – Samford Ecological Research Facility – General Induction. There are separate inductions for students and staff, however supervisors will have to do both tests.
SERF Online Induction Test (QUT access required)
Once on the website, follow these instructions carefully:
- You will need to enrol in the community first, so click the Self Enrol link at the top of the browser window.
- Read the “SERF General Safety Induction 2013” PDF document prior to starting the test.
- Read the list of instructions on the webpage, which explain the test and how to submit it.
- Once you have successfully completed the test you will receive an email with an attached PDF certificate approximately 2 hours after completion.
- You then need to sign your certificate and bring it to IFE reception, Level 6, P Block, Gardens Point Campus, to get your orange SERF sticker attached to your student or staff card.
It is the responsibility of all Supervisors to ensure that all their students have completed the test and received their green sticker prior to attending the property.
