Environmental Sensoring Equipment, Stuart Gage and Peter Grace
Environmental sound monitoring is being developed by Professor Peter Grace, Professor Paul Roe and student assistants at the Samford Ecological Research Facility in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology, and Michigan State University Professor Stuart Gage.
These sensors allow an assessment of ecosystem health through sound analysis.
The system is based on sampling the soundscape by recording of acoustic signals at regular intervals to assess changes in the acoustic environment.
When an acoustic signal is received by the server from a location, frequency bands are analysed for the occurence of animal species as well as the frequency of human activity.

The SERF is an initiative of Queensland University of Technology’s Institute for Sustainable Resources. As the name suggest, the Samford Ecological Research Facility has a dedicated long term research focus on sustainability and the environment. SERF supports undergraduate and postgraduate research, educational activities, and local community engagement.
The Material Change of Use application has been lodged with Council for the educational establishment of an ecological field research centre at Samford.
