Isaac Walter Jenner''s painting `Brisbane River, Garden Reach'' depicts the banks
of the river at Kangaroo Point, opposite the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. The
foreshore littered with lumber suggests the activity of industry. This is
confirmed by an image of the adjacent stretch of riverbank by Brisbane
photographer Poul C. Poulsen. This photograph in the Queensland Art Gallery
Collection `(Railway line at river front)'' 1880s (Acc. no. 2002.160), is taken
from almost the same vantage point as Jenner''s but captures the scene from the
opposite direction. Kangaroo Point developed as a major industrial area during
the twentieth century, and the site of Evans and Deakin, one of the most famous
engineering and shipbuilding firms in Australia. Such industry reinforces the
importance of the river to the development of Brisbane itself.
